2026 Yamaha MT-03

Welcome to the Yamaha MT-03 spec review. It has been awhile since I visited the small capacity, affordable or entry level range of motorcycles and even longer since the I did original Yamaha MT-03 preview. Since the MT-03 is still for sale, is it still worth buying and how does it compare to other affordable new motorcycles?

The MT-03 is a replacement for the original model which was a 600cc motorcycle. Yes Yamaha, it was quite a confusing model naming sequence – back in the day. The current MT-03 was released in 2020 and based on the YZF-R3 which is available in many countries for 2026.  

In terms of looks the MT-03 is quite generic, namely a semi-faired detuned sports bike wish that they could have made more of an effort! Whilst the R3 looks good as an entry level sports the MT-03 variant looks a little light weight for a MT series. 

In terms of engine and tech there is nothing special to write about since it is essentially a dressed down R3. At least it comes R3 hand me downs with a LCD instruments and blue-tooth connection to your phone and fancy LED lighting. The MT-03 also comes with the LAMS classification which makes it adequate for a daily commuter or the learner.

The surprise feature of the Yamaha MT-03 has nothing to do with technical specifications or looks but it’s price. For a motorcycle made by a major storied manufacturer, you can buy new MT-03 in 2026 for under $9000 AUD ride away (as I wite this review). It may be 300cc but in the era of ridiculous price increases due to inflation it is the same price as the classic 250cc years ago. That said there are other interesting models that you should consider, from CFMOTO for example.
