BMW R NineT
BMW R NineT

The BMW R NineT is the latest interpretation of a classic BMW R series motorcycle dating back almost about 90 years. As a result it makes it into my list of the best retro motorcycles in 2020. The Retro motorcycle for me represents a modern interpretation of what a motorcycle originally looked like when first released. It is a visual association rather than technical. That said the more original retro parts it has the better, especially in this category.

The R series of BMW motorcycles are represented buy a horizontal cylinder nacelles sticking out from the side of the engine block. This type of cylinder layout has been used by BMW from their very first motorcycle and is not common, with only Subaru and Porsche cars having this type of layout. While there are many technical benefits of having horizontal opposed cylinders there also many problems. Just do some searches and you’ll get a better idea rather than just believing me.

In terms of looks and design the BMW R NineT is not a conventionally good looking bike due to the cylinder design. But many do like it’s looks due to the difference. It’s name harks back to the R90S from the 70’s when you could call the R series a racing and rally motorcycle. I think it was the only model they made helped…  This is the first R series for a little while that doesn’t come with BMW’s patented front telelever front suspension and in it’s place is a small radiator. This omission means that it’s lost some recent design clues but more in keeping with the profile of the older R75 series for example. There are also plenty of ‘genuine BMW’ styling parts and packages you can get for a more stereotypical retro look.

In terms of engine and technology, the BMW R NineT has all the latest and usual features that include ABS, EFI, VVT, Traction control and so forth but also a rear para lever suspension with shaft drive. It’s a nice proven and reliable package which is also the basis for the GS adventure series and the RT touring series.

I rode one of these during a ride day many years ago and if memory services they are lovely albeit unexciting motorcycles and engines. This is not a criticism but an observation since many who are considering this type of motorcycle will probably want that above a sporty ride. Regardless it is one of the best retro motorcycle albeit a very expensive retro motorcycle you can buy new in 2020. The BMW R NineT is priced at around $24,000 AUD by the time you get it on the road….
