I’m on a scooter review theme after my affordable and special motorcycles post where I rediscovered the Vespa.  The Yamaha Tricity 155 is the subject this post as it’s the only 3 wheeled scooter you can still buy in Australia. It’s not the first 3 wheel scooter though, that was the unfortunately named Piaggo MP3 and it probably didn’t sell here as it was too expensive and it wasn’t called a Vespa.

Three wheeled scooters are pretty rare despite being popular elsewhere with a  claimed over 200,000 MP3 alone. Personally I can’t see the value in 3 wheels but perhaps with the benefits of negating balancing issues and not having to dirty your feet on the ground when stopped. Nevertheless two wheels in the front and one in the back will always have physics and other technical problems to overcome and in this case they have.

In terms of looks the Trinity 155 looks good, at least in pictures. Unfortunately on the street it’s not quite so attractive looking like a tall bicycle. The blacked out colour scheme was good in the early 2010’s but in 2018 it’s looking a little dated. The front end of the Tricity looks great but the rear end looks like it’s been borrowed from a regular scooter, specifically the Yamaha ‘Delight’ model.

In terms of specifications the Yamaha Tricity 155 is pretty basic I’m really pushing it to highlight any interesting tech features. Nonetheless it is the development of the twin wheel on the front is where the development money went. The larger 155cc engine probably due to the need to reduce emission requirements. The Trinity is also LAMS approved so anyone can ride one.

The Yamaha Trinity 155 is priced around $5000 AUD i n 2018 which is high for a 155cc engine but it does have 3 wheels and for those who have balance issues it is the perfect solution. I don’t think the Tricity is in my future list of purchases but it could be the bike just for you!

The Kawasaki Ninja 400 is yet another model released for the Learner or LAMS and commuting motorcycles class in 2018. This class is full of models and manufacturers tempting first time owners wanting a motorcycle they can use for more than just the first 12-24 months.

You may wonder why there is now a 400cc version to the original 250cc then 300cc the answer is pollution or emissions controls.  In a sense it’s a de-tuned traditional 400cc from the 1980’s. As a result it’s not really a motorcycle you can keep for that much longer since it is down on power but you have to start somewhere and the Ninja 400 is clearly a good place to start.

In term of looks the Ninja 400 on the outside is a good looking motorcycle with the latest Kawasaki design themes.  Under the fairing it boasts an all new Trellis frame design though it is not exactly obvious when you look at it. The main factor that differentiates it from the capacity versions is the slightly larger rear tyre.

In terms a specifications There is nothing to really write about apart from the new frame design. The Ninja 400 doesn’t even have USD forks but then for the price you wouldn’t expect it. If my past rides of this engine are anything to go by it’s not a exciting engine but for a newbie it’s more than enough for a little while. Finally, Kawasaki has not over priced or under specificed the Ninja 400 so worth a look.

Is the Kawasaki Ninja 400 any good? Well that depends what you want in a first motorcycle or a commuter, stereotypical styling albeit contemporary adequate power and since is derived from the original 250 reliability is a great start but I prefer something special! even if my choices are a little more expensive.
