The Honda CRF250L is a relatively new 250cc model, originally released in 2013 that falls into my learner and commuter category. The CRF series is the replacement for the long serving XR series as a dual purpose motorcycle. It is also the basis for the CRF250X the enduro version of the same motorcycle. The CRF250L is a road/trail motorcycle as per the WR250R from Yamaha and Kawasaki KLX250L competitors.
Being a new model the CRF uses the engine based on the road going CBR250R, so is reliable, modifiable amongst other things. Furthermore as with any motorcycle in this class has the benefit of being durable since they have to handle tough terrain and requisite falling over in a variety of conditions.
Like others in the dual-purpose class the CRF250L which was designed as off road motorcycle in the first place (CRF250X) so the key features as I see it, of high ground clearance, light weight, plank like seats and no wind protection means good commuting qualities but long distance touring is for people who are reasonably healthy. Fuel consumption is claimed to be under 3 litres per 100km. Like its competitors the CRF250L looks great on the road and in the showroom so that’s really all your need to know unless you’re really concerned about specifications.
Still interested – some other things you may want to consider before getting the CRF250L: You need reasonably long legs due to seat height but at least more reasonable 875mm than the competitors from Yamaha and Kawasaki which more than 100mm (10 cm) taller. Like all trail bikes it has a small fuel tank and if parking in insecure locations – theft due to desirability. Any off road capable model is high in demand on the off road scene legal or otherwise since there are next to no police presence in the bush.
I like the Honda CRF250L and think its a better choice compared to it direct competitors due to the lower ride and like all new Honda’s a reasonable price! It’s over $1500 cheaper than the Yamaha WR250R (at the time of writing) but even less than the Kawasaki KLX250. In the end I prefer the CRF250L or even the WRX250R over flawed KLX250S for reasons you’ll have to read the other reviews over the next few weeks.
