Kawasaki KLR650

Welcome to the spec and showroom review of the Kawasaki KLR650. The Kawasaki KLX650 is the latest generation of the long running KLR series of dual sport motorcycles. They are claimed to offer affordability, reliability and durability. So what is the current generation of the KLR650 like?

In terms of looks the KLR series it hasn’t changed much over the years. It is the stereotypical trail bike that has been urbanised. Dual purpose or dual sports motorcycles like the KRL650 are like the SUVs of 2026. The are comfortable for on road and able to go off road. I haven’t taken a closer look at this series before main because the riding position is a little too high and I have no need to this type of motorcycle. That said the KLR650 Adventure variant has a nice set of driving lights and panniers but the camo paint work of decals are a little off trend. However if you’re reading this then it may be the right bike for you!

In terms of engine and tech the KLR650 there isn’t any leading edge features worth promoting. The engine basics are old but it has been updated many times since it’s introduction in the 80’s. That usually means that it is durable unit due to length evolution. To cater for a relatively modern requirement – is the inclusion of a selectable ABS override. Apart from that it is the class average in terms of features.

In the end a new Kawasaki KLR650 is a entry level dual sport motorcycle. Although it has a 650CC engine it is only a single but with sufficient torque to push the heavy bike with some cargo but it is not particular fast in 2026. How fast is the KLR650? the answer is that it is LAMS compliant – so not very in the age of electric cars.  In terms of price the KLR650 is not expensive but it is overpriced compared to its historical average. But this is the era of high inflation and tariffs so we should get used to it…
