Kawasaki Ninja e-1
Kawasaki Ninja e-1

For 2024 Kawasaki have made and released their first and  proper electric motorcycle the e-1 series. There are two models in the e-1 range and the Ninja e-1 model pictured here is the full faired version which is supposed to be part of the Ninja sports bike series.

In terms of looks the Kawasaki Ninja e-1 is remarkably similar to any other Ninja, especially the 250/400. The fairing hides the battery and electric motor. Unlike the Z version the Ninja e-1 actually looks like part of their sports bike series.

In terms of technology the Ninja e-1 like the Z e-1 scores top marks since it is fully electric. There are a few interesting features like the modular dual battery packs that you can remove and they are swappable so they can be charged away from the bike, regenerative braking, a reverse ‘gear’ and phone connectivity. The final drive is via a motorcycle style chain so there is some inefficiency…

The Kawasaki Ninja e-1 is a more logical step in presenting a sports bike in terms of looks. Bikes are fast and the Ninja e-1 looks fast but with the same ‘engine’ packages as the Z  e-1 series this has a short range and limited performance in terms of acceleration and speed. I’m sure everyone will be questioning the commercial decision to release an electric motorcycle with such limited performance however I suspect it forms the basis of other models, in particular scooters for food delivery drivers and warehouse automation.
