The Watch Journey – Categories
Welcome to the second part of my watch journey. There are many types of watches to choose from. This time I don’t really have a goal as I have older watches that still work I think. Regardless I do want a new one as the others are getting old and my desire to try something different.
There are plenty of watch categories to look through and here are some that I considered. That said looking at the range in the shops or on line there are some types that I am drawn to.
Tough watch: I love these things. They are big and usually made of plastic but there are some that are encased in metal as well. They usually have the G-SHOCK branding printed on them. They have plenty of features like compass, altitude, thermometer, GPS, stop watch or timers, World time, heart rate and so forth. They look tough, durable and have sci-fi or high tech designs. Mind you that could be called smart watches…
Dress Watch: There are plenty to choose from and they usually have metal cases but a combination of metal or leather like straps. Some do look nice aka more expensive than their price and brand suggests. These watches are best paired with a nice outfit for more special occasions aka weddings and events. Sure you could use them as everyday watches.
Divers Watch: The Divers watch category is the old folks category. Unless you actually go diving I can’t see the point unless if you consider it a fashion statement. These things are big and heavy and often Rolex is mentioned. I think that’s a bit of a stretch for Rolex as a brand in 2024 as I don’t recall reading any real diver using a Rolex. These are worn by used watch sales people and brand fans aka Youtube influencers hoping to profit on the brand name. Anyway there are plenty of other brands and models that are genuine divers watches.
EDC Watch: There are also plenty of models to choose from. You can tell these ones by their understated design and materials. That said I saw many models that could easily cover multiple usage situations. I find this category of watch interesting as this is really subjective. If you where a builder a tough watch would come in handy for being durable or if you are in the office any sort of dress watch would work.
