Yamaha YZF-R15M

The Yamaha YZF-R15M is the replacement of the YZF-R15 and the entry level to the R range of Yamaha sports motorcycles. The 2022 YZF-R15M is a 155cc so it not exactly a powerhouse however motorcycles are inherently overpowered for their size and weight so this is quite a zippy motorcycle in isolation. 

In terms of looks the YZF-R15M has been given the latest design language from Yamaha’s R7 super sports model.  You wouldn’t confuse the two models on the road since the R15M is rather ‘thin’ but it’s a good effort unlike the last R15… Yes, the YZF-R15M is LAMS or learner approved as a full powered model. 

In terms of the engines and tech, the YZF-R1M has been fitted with most of the latest technology –  hardware and software. The 2022 YZF-R15M has Yamaha’s version of Variable Valve Timing called VVA which occurs at a decent 7400RPM and fitted with EFI for consistent and reliable power output. The tech features are expected for a motorcycle in 2022 unless a retro motorcycle. So you get a full digital dash, USD front forks, ABS, a quick shifter along with traction control. An added bonus for the time being, as it is usually restricted to more expensive models you also get Yamaha Y-Connect! So you can connect to your phone for  GPS based park location and engine diagnostics data. That said there are no engine management systems to actually change after all this is a 155CC engine. 

Overall the Yamaha YZF-R15M is a pretty decent upgrade to the original R15 no question and certainly worth the current price all things considered. However it has almost doubled in price compared to the last time I reviewed the model back in 2013. The R15M is clearly targeted a new riders or commuters who want a more sports orientated model at least in looks and want a bit of street cred – as a result the R15M is arguably one of the better models to get.
