Suzuki V-Strom 1000XT – DL1000XT

Suzuki V-Strom DL1000XT

The 2017 Suzuki V-Strom 1000XT is a new model name although the V-Strom itself has been around for quite a few years. I’m featuring it again because it’s colour scheme caught my eye, compared to prior schemes. It’s an example how simply changing colours and specification on a motorcycle can attract attention.

The V-Strom 1000XT is the Cross Touring version of the regular V-Strom which means is spec’d for on and off road trips. The V-Strom XT’s standard features include wire spoked wheels in a great shade of ‘gold’, rally inspired colour scheme, traction control, re-calibrated ABS brakes, a low speed clutch assist system, tool-less rear pre-load adjustments if you have a larger passenger, adjustable front screen deflector and the requisite handlebar guards. All are definitely useful for all terrain touring.

The terms of design, Suzuki have seemingly tried to emulate BMW’s bit and pieces approach for the motorcycle design however it’s not quite successful. The V-Strom  has always been little ungainly in not a good way to look at. The new colour scheme helps but it really needs some more designer input for everything else. The BMW GS still sets the standard after all these years that said the Honda Africa Twin in the same class is just as good looking in a Honda way.

If you want a powerful all terrain motorcycle or adventure motorcycle that’s almost ready for long rides the V-Strom 1000XT is the motorcycle to buy, if you can live with it’s looks. However there are alternatives that are just as good.  I do think that the entire range should come with the wire wheels as standard which is ultimately the only difference between the DL100XT and the regular V-Strom DL1000.
