Seiko SSK059 and Seiko SBSC009 watch comparison and review

Welcome to the Seiko SSK059 and Seiko SBSC009 review and comparison. Firstly, a bit of background as to why I even bothered to do this review let alone a comparison of essentially the to identical models but with different model numbers. The SBSC009 was the Japan only model that is sort after by mostly watch enthusiasts as a souvenir of their Japan trip. This model is legitimately hard to find in stores as I tried to buy one but failed. It’s taken couple years but I am guessing in order to sell more watches Seiko have made an international model and released the SSK059 to satisfy the those unable to go to Japan.

So what are the SSK059 and SBSC009? These models are part of the ‘Seiko 5’ field watch model range but with the added feature of a GMT hand. So the full model name would be something like Seiko 5 Field GMT. The odd thing but interesting is that many of the watch professionals aka watch dealers liken it to a Rolex Explorer – for me it is clear that these self proclaimed professionals have never seen yet alone held a real Rolex Explorer. The only similarity is the dial colour and that they are round but truth is that the Seiko looks better because of the dial texture which is amazing for such an inexpensive watch. Nonetheless after visiting Japan many times I have Rolex overload and they truly no longer hold any upmarket or luxury status – there are just too many of them. 

In terms of looks Seiko SSK059 and SBSC009 are in white on silver and it has a slight retro look, more so than the black on black or black on silver variants. I am also guessing that future colour variants are in development if this one becomes popular. Both have the 24 hour markers on the bezel that are engraved,  recessed and filled in with black paint so it should wear well. However but there are also 24 hour markings on the dial, that’s probably because it is based on the donor non-GMT field variants. I don’t think it looks cluttered. As a bonus, the surface of the dial is textured like sand paper which gives it bonus points to the detail design since even the most expensive brands can’t even do it. More points for the glow in the dark lume on all hour markers and hands – yes even the seconds hand! 

The SSK059 and SBSC009 case is made of stainless steel including the bracelet. The smooth surfaces and brushing looks good for the price, as good any Hamilton field watch including the Murph version which costs almost 3 times the price. The standard metal bracelet looks good but does not feel premium which is expected for the price but at least it is secure. The rear of the cases have a see through glass and the movement looks pretty good. Just as good as Tissot or Hamilton for examples. 

In terms of calibre the Seiko SSK059 and Seiko SBSC009 use the latest 4R34 calibre or movement the current variant name in 4R34A. It is quite a new one designed to be the most affordable movement not just for Seiko but any other brand that uses their movements aka (NH34) micro or independent watch brands. By brand reputation it it should last a long time without relatively needing expensive servicing. However as the movement is man made your experience will vary in terms of life span and usage. 

The glass used on the model is called Curved Hardlex which is a propriety formula that is harder than normal glass without cost of manufactured sapphire crystal which is much harder but dangerously shatters. Many have down played the durability of Hardlex but Seiko have used it for decades and indeed I have a 20 year old model that uses it and despite scratches on the case the glass remains scratch free.

So if both Seiko SSK059 and SBSC009 look the same and made of the same parts what is the difference? The difference is the tiny Made in JAPAN tag at the bottom of the dial. The SBSC009 has the made in Japan tag line and the SSK059 does not not. Is the SBSC009 better than the SSK059? no they are the same. The SBSC009 costs less than the SSK059 at the moment so this factor is not marketing FOMO thing rather a practical note. It reminds me of the Swiss Made line – only 60% of a watch needs to be ‘made’ or ‘developed’ in Switzerland to qualify. The Made in Japan tag is used when a significant portion of the product is transformed in Japan – same meaning but without the percentage.
