News and updates for 19th May 2013

Two bits of interesting news this week with some commentary:

1 – The Northern Territory is considering removing the speed restrictions on the open highway. Apparently the death toll increased since they where put in place or maybe because they have noticed a flaw in the statistics? This is sensible news or perhaps political move to get more road funding. Being an election year I suspect it is a politically motivated. Check out this link.

2 – The spectre of number plates in front of motorcycle is again being considered. It’s because the speed cameras can’t get them apparently. This is strange since I’ve never seen very many cameras getting images front on. It’s because bright flashes are a distraction and cause accidents. So the authorities are planning to causing accidents? Not a very safe move. Besides it wasn’t very clever to point out that speeding fine revenue has decreased – Eg. Tasmania – it may have been for safety at first but now its purely for the money and not safety which is not a good move. Check out this link.
