Yamaha Tricity 155

Yamaha Tricity 155

I’m on a scooter review theme after my affordable and special motorcycles post where I rediscovered the Vespa.  The Yamaha Tricity 155 is the subject this post as it’s the only 3 wheeled scooter you can still buy in Australia. It’s not the first 3 wheel scooter though, that was the unfortunately named Piaggo MP3 and it probably didn’t sell here as it was too expensive and it wasn’t called a Vespa.

Three wheeled scooters are pretty rare despite being popular elsewhere with a  claimed over 200,000 MP3 alone. Personally I can’t see the value in 3 wheels but perhaps with the benefits of negating balancing issues and not having to dirty your feet on the ground when stopped. Nevertheless two wheels in the front and one in the back will always have physics and other technical problems to overcome and in this case they have.

In terms of looks the Trinity 155 looks good, at least in pictures. Unfortunately on the street it’s not quite so attractive looking like a tall bicycle. The blacked out colour scheme was good in the early 2010’s but in 2018 it’s looking a little dated. The front end of the Tricity looks great but the rear end looks like it’s been borrowed from a regular scooter, specifically the Yamaha ‘Delight’ model.

In terms of specifications the Yamaha Tricity 155 is pretty basic I’m really pushing it to highlight any interesting tech features. Nonetheless it is the development of the twin wheel on the front is where the development money went. The larger 155cc engine probably due to the need to reduce emission requirements. The Trinity is also LAMS approved so anyone can ride one.

The Yamaha Trinity 155 is priced around $5000 AUD i n 2018 which is high for a 155cc engine but it does have 3 wheels and for those who have balance issues it is the perfect solution. I don’t think the Tricity is in my future list of purchases but it could be the bike just for you!

Yamaha T-Max

Yamaha TMAX 530

After writing about the Vespa last week it occurred to me that I’ve never really looked at the latest Scooter Motorcycle class at all and that despite  owning an Honda DN-01. It has probably been about 10 years since manufacturers started making high performance or sports scooters and the most known model is the Yamaha TMAX and in this case the TMAX 530 the fastest scooter in the world maybe…

The Yamaha TMAX in 2018 is marketed a sports scooter and they have designed it to look the part too and it looks fast. In terms of design the TMAX stays true to the scooter formula with the smaller wheels and large body. This is a little unfortunate as they could have tried something different like what Honda did with the DN-01. Regardless it is a good looking and it’s size means it does get noticed.

In terms of mechanical specifications it has an in line 2 cylinder engine with a capacity of 530cc which is huge in traditional scooter terms producing decent power at relatively low RPM and a fat torque curve at the same time. Seems very much like a Cruiser performance profile – doesn’t it? This is the key to the TMAX and means that it can easily cope with 100kph and more speeds on the freeway with ease. Apart form the engine there are the usual keyless start and running, ABS brakes, USD forks, LED lights, power socket, a separate rear swing arm, very car like instrument panel and plenty of storage space.

Everything looks great but there is one major problem with the TMAX 530 and that is to do with price. The2018 pricing for the TAMX 530 is $13,990 AUD which simply put is expensive.  Even more so when you consider the competition in the price segment and that there are genuinely special and affordable motorcycles you can buy for less.
